Join our day in Vietnam culture tour to experience the authentic Vietnam, learn about the local life, and get in touch with the spiritual side of the people via Len Dong Ritual.
What is “Len Dong”?
Len Dong (Vietnamese: Lên Đồng) is a ritual practiced in Vietnamese folk religion and the Mother Goddess Religion, “Đạo Mẫu”.
Why “Len Dong”?
It is considered as a means to communicate with the Goddess. The medium (male or female) will help express the desires and expectations of the people through his or her dances.
How is it performed?
The medium will facilitate different deities and spirits. There are up to 36 spirits, representing 36 Gods and Goddesses.
What does helloVietnam offer?
Join us to have a chance to partake in such a sacred ritual and get a deeper view of the spiritual life of Vietnamese people in the Vietnam culture tour. You will also visit a rural area outside Hanoi capital, see the handicraft wood-carving village and Thay Pagoda, and then enjoy a private mini water puppet show by Artist Phan Thanh Liem.
Morning: Travel 20km to the west of Hanoi to visit the Son Dong wood-carving village. While wandering around the small village, you can easily notice many shops selling wooden worshiping objects. The main products are statues of Buddha, national heroes, objects of worship, lacquered boards with parallel sentences, and altars. These products have not only reached pagodas and temples nationwide, but also some foreign markets.
Let’s drop into a workshop where a local craftsman will tell you more about their daily life and their dedicated products: They will probably share the name of each product, its story and legend, as well as the meaning it holds in the local’s spiritual life.
In the late morning, we continue our Vietnam culture tour to the nearby village to visit a very special person: a medium who plays a very important role in "Len Dong” ritual - a newly recognized UNESCO intangible heritage. Listen to the medium's sharing about "Len Dong" - or "going into a trance" - a ritual practiced in Vietnamese folk religion and the mother goddess religion, Đạo Mẫu, in which followers become spirit mediums for various deities. The ancient Vietnamese people initiated the practice of communicating with the universe in this “going into a trance” ritual.
Enjoy lunch with the medium's family. After lunch, you will have the chance to observe the real and sacred "Len Dong" ritual, as the medium will facilitate different deities and spirits.
At around 15:00, we will leave the medium's house and visit the nearby Thay Pagoda to admire its beautiful ancient architecture and natural scenery. After that, head back to Hanoi center to enjoy the wonderful mini water puppet show performed by Artist Phan Thanh Liem.
