In the article "3 reasons why Phu Quoc is the most memorable wedding destination in Vietnam", I have mentioned Phu Quoc as a not-to-miss tourist attraction in Vietnam with beautiful beaches, breath-taking sceneries and ecosystem diversity. If you have taken a trip to the Pearl Island and are wondering what to do or when to go, check our list of six things to do in Phu Quoc Island.
Visit National Park
Mountain hiking in National Park
Coming to Phu Quoc National Park, you will have the chance to explore Chua Peak at the height of 565m, which can be regarded as the roof of Phu Quoc Island. There are some basic walking tracks in the park for your adventure. However, if you make up your mind to hike up the mountain on your own, remember to be well prepared (take food and water, make your hiking plan carefully, tell someone where you go, etc).
Go shopping at local market
A food stall in Dinh Cau night market
Visiting local market is highly recommended for travelers who want to experience the daily life of local people. Different from supermarkets with frozen food and chilled goods, the local markets in Phu Quoc offer fresh vegetables, fruit, meat and seafood. Located in the town centre, along the river, Duong Dong market is the largest and most crowded market in the Pearl Island.
Beside Duong Dong market, hanging out with friends and family at night in Dinh Cau night market is not a bad idea. The market is located in Duong Dong town, near the coast. You can find almost everything in here, such as souvenirs, cosmetic, jewelries, handicrafts and pearls. The most famous things here are food stalls serving local dishes made from seafood such as chao ca (fish rice soup) or banh canh cha ca (rice soup with grilled fish).
Riding motorbike brings you exciting experience
The next one on the list of things to do in Phu Quoc Island is exploring the island on a motorbike . This may not the most adventurous activity but it will bring you the most unforgettable experiences. In Phu Quoc, you can easily rent a motorbike in motorbike rental shop with affordable price (about $8 per day) and many types of bikes to choose: scooter, automatic motorbike and even occasional motorcycle.
Road conditions in Phu Quoc change due to development, some are well paved now, others are red dirt paths which are quite dangerous in the wet season. The exciting part in riding a motorbike in Phu Quoc is to discover beaches located by red dirt roads, for instance, Bai Thom Beach area or Bai Dai Beach in the northwest.
Diving and snorkeling
Snorkeling gives you a chance to watch colorful coral reefs
Phu Quoc owns diverse marine ecosystem and rich ocean life which makes this beautiful island become a perfect destination for diving and watching coral reef. An Thoi Archipelago, Mong Tay Island or Doi Moi Island in the northern Phu Quoc are the attractive spots for you to explore the sea. Corals here are the most various in Vietnam with 17 different types of corals and sea anemones. The warm and nutrient rich water bring ideal condition for vast schools of tropical fish. The amazing underwater scenery, abundant marine life with good visibility will please any divers.
If you are an amateur in diving, you can enroll a course for beginners or pro if you want to challenge yourself. You can easily hire snorkeling equipment in diving locations near the beach.
Squid fishing is the most interesting activity at night
Night squid fishing is the most interesting thing-to-do in Phu Quoc that you may not experience anywhere else. Nothing can be compared to the excitement when catching a squid by yourself and enjoying it right on the board with a can of beer. There are various squid fishing tours on offer, some last for 2 hours, others are up to 4 hours including a chance to have a small BBQ party with squid and fish.
Like other tours , night squid fishing can be easily held once you visit Phu Quoc Island. If you are lucky enough, you may have your own self-sufficient dinner on the spot.
Joining in water sport activities
Kayaking in Phu Quoc
Water sports have appeared recently in the Pearl Island. Apart from diving and snorkeling, other common sports include kayaking, jet skiing and wind sailing. Cool climate and calm water in most time of the year in Phu Quoc create ideal conditions for kayaking and other water sports. Some resorts offer rental kayaks for tourists with reasonable prices (about $4 - $5 per hour). After some exercise, you can start your kayaking trip on Long Beach which provides a wide space and a few water vehicles.
