Khau Vai love market is also known as Phong Luu market with a long history of roughly 100 years. There are two ways to perceive the intended meaning of Phong Luu. The first one is old-fashioned, meaning the market of fortune, and the other refers to the manner of elegance and politeness. Regardless of its name, folks say that the very first market day took place in the year of 1919. It was is held at Khau Vai hamlet, Meo Vac district, Ha Giang, Vietnam and the focal point is that it only occurred once a year on the 27th of March in the lunar calendar.
It stemmed from the legend of a broken-hearted love story between an ethnic Nung boy and a Giay girl in a remote hilly neighborhood of Ha Giang province. This love did not receive support from both families. A sense of duty compelled them to be away from each other in order to avoid further unexpected conflicts. They made a vow to meet up at a secret rendezvous at Khau Vai Mountain on the 27th of the third lunar month every year, in order to confide to one another.
